TRAINING TIPS
BARKING:Barking can be one of the most annoying things a dog can do. Especially if they bark consistently and at every little sound they hear. There are a lot of wrong ways to teach a dog not to bark, whether it is yelling at the dog, an electric shock collar, or some other torturous technique. Here are a few tips that involve the use of ultrasonic devices to teach your barking dog to hush.
First off, the goal should be to teach the dog to not bark without inflicting pain or emotional abuse upon the animal. There are ultrasonic dog training devices that will train your dog not to bark at every sound and it does it in a very safe and humane way.
The technology behind the ultrasonic device makes use of a different pitch that is far too low for the human to hear. The sound is not painful, but it is very distracting and annoying to the animal as they can’t figure out where the sound came from. Over time the dog will stop barking at less important things, because it wants to avoid hearing the sound. The technique works well on most dogs, but an older one who has suffered some hearing loss will most likely just continue to bark as they usually can’t hear the sound anyway.
The ultrasonic technology is available in a few different items. The most common is the collar and that allows you to more closely control the dog. It is also introduced into stationary objects as well and this can be useful if you have a neighbor’s dog that barks a lot. While the device may be effective to stop another dog, you would be better off discussing solutions with your neighbor first, because they could easily become offended if they find one of these devices suddenly aimed into their yard. Working on the barking issue is important, but you shouldn’t sacrifice neighbor relations unless it’s a last resort.
Ultrasonic has provided humane dog training devices and the cost is not prohibitive. Unfortunately, no device will ever replace quality obedience training, but at times there are no alternatives. Taking the time to try out the device could end up being the perfect remedy to the barking situation. It is important to read up on the device and make sure it is configured properly, because if the sensitivity level is too high, then the device will constantly go off and the dog will just be annoyed, instead of linking the sound to their bark.
CRATING:
Dog kennels can
be very useful to the canine owner. These crates can be used
to house train, travel, offer the dog a place to sleep, or contain a
misbehaving pup. Kennels are available in a variety of sizes and can be
purchased from a number of locations, from Internet retailers to big
box stores
to pet specialty outlets.
The owner should
purchase a crate that is made from or lined with a material
that can be cleaned easily, such as polyethylene. It is possible to
build a dog
kennel at home from scrap wood or other materials, but this type of
kennel can
be hard to clean and might retain a “doggy” smell. A crate should have
plenty
of breathing holes. Some crates may be portable or temporary and can be
dismantled or folded for storage. These kennels are probably not a good
buy if
one plans to keep the dog confined overnight or to corral a
rambunctious puppy
because they are not very sturdy for long term use. This type of kennel
is also
often easy to chew or may rip from a dog’s scratching.
Dog kennels come
in many different colors. One may choose a color that
matches with their home decor or one that they simply enjoy. Light
colored
kennels may get stained or dirty, so it is important to keep that in
mind. If
the crate being purchased is for a small dog that is going to be
traveling
frequently, a handle is a great addition and should be centered on the
top of
the crate. A box that is being placed in a vehicle for travel should be
secured
so that it doesn’t slide or tip. This can be done using bungee cords or
strong
straps.
A water bowl may
be included on the front of the crate. This is a good
option for dogs that will be in the kennel for a long period of time.
It is not
usually a good idea to provide food while the dog is crated since it
may cause
the dog to need to go to the bathroom.
Crates are perfect for house training a puppy because dogs usually will not use the bathroom in their sleeping spot. Crating a puppy at night will prevent accidents.
OFF LEAD TRAINING:
Many people wish their dog was trained to obey commands even when off the leash. The problem is that most people don’t understand off leash dog training and believe that it is a miracle that can occur overnight with the right sort of training. If you start early, you can teach your dog good habits when it is young and most susceptible to training. The best part is if you show your puppy love and respect from the very beginning you will end up with a well trained and well behaved dog. Here are some tips on how to self train your pooch.
The first step is to ensure you take appropriate means when you begin training your dog, because you want to be able to rein in your pet if there is an emergency or similar situation. The best thing to do is start with an exceptionally long leash, preferably at least ten or twelve feet; this will allow to you to let the dog roam free and still be able to catch him if necessary. The goal isn’t to hold the leash, but just let the dog drag it along with him. You want to start in familiar areas at first and before you let go of the leash, lead your dog around and let them sniff until they are content and no longer curious.
You want to make sure to bring some treats or favorite toys to help with teaching the dog to return when you call them. In the beginning you want to treat and praise the dog on every single return. The important thing is to avoid grabbing the dog or their collar when they return. You don’t want to teach the dog that returning means grabbing their collar or putting them on a leash. Yelling or screaming at the dog to return is just a bad idea. You need to make sure you are always upbeat and positive, so you can associate happy feelings with returning to you.
Off leash dog training is a goal that most want to accomplish. The amount of work involved can make it rough to obtain and needs to be started early. If you put in the work though, you will be rewarded with a loyal and loving animal that is happy and willing to obey commands. Proper training leads to a good natured and well behaved dog, which is a goal we all aspire to with our pets.
